Typically, what causes the WordPress Admin Dashboard (wp-admin area) to be slow to load or parts of it to be slow are the plugins you are using on the site.

Speeding Up the WordPress Admin Panel

What is the WordPress Admin Dashboard?

The WordPress Admin Dashboard is where you control all of the functionality within your WordPress site. Often called simply the WordPress Dashboard, the WordPress Admin Dashboard (also known as the WordPress Admin Panel, the WP Admin, the WP Admin Panel, or just the wp-admin) is essentially the master control panel for your WordPress site. It allows the admin to create/manage content, add plugins/themes, configure general settings, and much more.

What is the WordPress Heartbeat?

The “heartbeat” feature in WordPress sends continuous signals (referred to as ticks) to perform tasks on regular intervals, and it is used to monitor user actions and send periodic updates to the web server.

The WordPress Heartbeat API lets the browser talk with the server using AJAX calls and provide rapid two-way communication regarding the state of the WordPress Admin Dashboard. The WordPress Heartbeat is used to save drafts automatically, track revisions, lock post edits when multiple users are involved, manage sessions, log out administrators after inactivity, and much more.

How to Access Your WordPress Admin Dashboard

If you have issues trying to access your WordPress Admin Dashboard for your site, you can reset your password and then check your email for the password reset link. From the password reset email, you will be taken to reset the password on your site, and then, using the new password, you will be able to log into your WordPres Admin Dashboard in the wp-admin area.

If you just created your WordPress site and have not migrated over an existing site to replace your new install site, then you can find the admin username and the admin password in both the heads-up display at the top of the plan list in the portal — as well as in the environment section of your site's Client Portal.

If you are having issues with the WordPress Admin Dashboard loading slowly, you should check for any critical errors happening on your site and debug your site. A common reason why your site's WordPress Admin Dashboard is not loading as expected would be from an active plugin or theme causing an issue on the site.

How to Improve Speed of the WP-Admin Panel

Typically, what causes the entire WordPress Admin Dashboard (wp-admin) to be slow to load or parts of it to be slow are the plugins you are using on the site.

To improve the WordPress Admin Dashboard's default load time, look at disabling the admin dashboard widgets that you do not want to use. There are some plugins that allow you to control how widgets load on the default dashboard page, and one of those is called Widget Disable. After you have installed and activated the Widget Disable plugin, it will add a new admin menu named:

Appearance > Disable Widgets > Dashboard Widgets

Select widgets that you do not want to display when you first load the dashboard screen and then save the changes.

When you go back to the WordPress Admin Dashboard home screen, you will notice that it loads faster.

If you have intensive database queries running in the WordPress Admin Dashboard on the site, you can find those using the Query Monitor plugin which will show the slow queries, and then you can trace those back to the plugin which is causing them. Another way to find out which plugins and database queries are causing the WordPress Admin Dashboard to load slowly would be New Relicsince New Relic can also find out which plugins and themes are causing performance issues on the front-end of your site.

Managed WordPress plans all come with Redis object cachingwhich can help improve the load time and speed of the wp-admin dashboard area. Redis helps by caching common database quests, and the query is served from Redis, and it does not have to be served out from a MySQL query.

Ensuring that all of the site's database tables are using InnoDB and not using MyISAM, along with having the correct indexed set in the site's database. can help parts of the wp-admin speed and performance. If you are looking for a plugin solution to ensure that a performance index is set on your site's database, then the Index WP MySQL For Speed plugin is worth using. After you have installed and activated the plugin on your site, it will add a new admin menu to:

Tools > Index MySQL

Select all of the database tables you want to add Performance Keys to, and then click on the Add Keys Now button:

After clicking the Add Keys Now button, you will see the following confirmation message:

If you use a site host that does not provide Redis for object caching, it could be worth testing out the Docket Cache. The plugin will convert the object into PHP code and is used if you cannot use Redis for object caching on your current host. To understand more about the Docket Cache plugin, the documentation will help expand your knowledge of the plugin.

One of the last recommendations for improving the wp-admin panel (WordPress Admin Dashboard) is to take control of how often the Heartbeat API that is built into WordPress itself runs. This can only be done by using a simple plugin called Heartbeat Control to be able to control the Heartbeat API manually.

After you have installed and activated the Heartbeat Control plugin, you can find its settings from:

Settings > Heartbeat Control

In the plugin settings, you can control the heartbeat frequency for the WordPress Admin Dashboard, the Frontend of the site, and the Post Editor.

Heartbeat Control screen

The provided plugin recommendations and tips will help improve your WordPress dashboard load times and speed and make it easier for you to be able to log into your wp-admin area on your site.
