How to use TraceRoute

TraceRoute is a TCP/IP utility that allows you to trace a network connection from one location to another in order to diagnose network connection issues. Follow the instructions for your operating system (OS).

ATTENTION: Reading MTR results is not intuitive and usually requires special training; however, you can avoid common pitfalls by following the advice provided in How to interpret MTR results.

How to use TraceRoute in Windows 

  1. Perform one of the following steps:
    1. Windows XP: Click Start > Run. Type "cmd."
    2. Windows 7: Click Start and type "Run" in the Search programs and files field, then type "cmd."
    3. Windows 8: Click the Windows Explorer icon, then the File menu. From the File menu, click open command prompt.
    4. Windows 10: Click the Windows icon on the lower left, then type "cmd."

  2. At the command prompt, type "tracert" followed by a space and then the target IP address or domain name. For example: tracert destination.

  3. Click Enter.

  4. To copy the results to send to our Support Team:
    1. Right-click anywhere on the screen and click Select All.

    2. Open a text editor, and hit Ctrl-V to paste the results to a text editor of your choice. 

How to use TraceRoute in Mac OSX

  1. From the toolbar, click Go and then select Utilities.

  2. Open the Network Utility.

  3. From the Network Utility window, click Traceroute.

  4. Type the destination IP address or domain name) and click Trace.

  5. Copy the results to send to the Nexcess Support Team by clicking inside the window and copy the results.

  6. Open a text editor and paste the results.
