Learn how to install OpenVPN, which is available as an add-on for all Nexcess clients on non-cloud dedicated or cluster plans.

But first...

You must already have the .ovpn configuration file provided by our support team in order to complete these instructions. This file includes the IP addresses for your servers, among other details required for connection.

Passwords are not required for connection; however, if a user attempts a connection, and then another user attempts a connection using the same .ovpn configuration file, then OpenVPN will disconnect the first user. If you require more users, contact our support team, who will provide additional .ovpn configuration files.

macOS

Although there are many possible methods, we recommend using Tunnelblick as directed below.

  1. Download and install Tunnelblick as directed on their website.

  2. Open Tunnelblick. When prompted, click I have configuration files, then follow the on-screen instructions to direct Tunnelblick to .ovpn configuration file provided by our Support Team.

  3. If you want all users on this device to have access, click All Users. If you want to restrict access to the current user, click Only Me.

  4. Select the Tunneblick icon, then click Connect <file_name>, where <file_name> is the name of your .ovpn configuration file.

  5. You should now be connected. Select Disconnect at any time to terminate your connection.

Windows

Although many options exist, we recommend using the OpenVPN client made available by its creators. Proceed as follows:

  1. Navigate to the Downloads page of the OpenVPN website.

  2. At the top of the page, locate the latest stable release and select the executable file in the row named “installer, Windows Vista and later."

  3. After the download is complete, open the file and grant all necessary permissions to the installer using default settings.

  4. After installation, near the lower right corner of your screen, click the arrow, then right-click on the OpenVPN GUI icon and click Import File.
  5. Select the .ovpn configuration file, then click Open.

  6. As in Step 4, select the OpenVPN GUI icon, then click Connect. To disconnect, click Disconnect from this menu.

Linux

We recommend using the instructions posted on the official OpenVPN website.
