Webmaster

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, USA

Nexcess is a Southfield, Michigan-based managed hosting company founded in 2000, with wholly-owned data centers located in Dearborn and Southfield, Michigan. Nexcess offers a variety of hosting services ranging from entry-level packages to custom clustered/complex hosting configurations, with an emphasis on mission-critical hosting for high-profile business and eCommerce web sites.

Over the years, many of our clients have grown from very small businesses or tiny boutique sites into large operations requiring complex hosting solutions. We have taken great pleasure in being able to aid in our clients' growth and accommodate their growing needs by providing a broad range of plans and services, as well as first-class, 24/7 U.S. based support.

This position is for a full time salaried, Webmaster working on site at our offices in Dearborn and/or Southfield, MI. Polished webmaster skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Creation of site layouts using standard HTML and CSS and basic PHP
  • Routine daily maintenance of existing sites
  • Work directly with a team to design and modify Advertising, PDF's, Web Layouts, and other design materials.

Requirements

  • Must be proficient in HTML5 and CSS3
  • Working knowledge of PHP
  • Working knowledge of jQuery a plus

Website Migration Specialist

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, USA

This position is for a full time Migration Specialist working on site at our data center in Dearborn, MI. Advanced Linux skills are required as we use Linux exclusively.

Responsibilities

  • Website Moves:
    • Transferring client data from other hosts over to their account with us
    • Transferring client data between servers on our network for upgrades
    • Troubleshooting issues related to the data migration to make sure sites are functioning in the new location properly
    • Updating clients on regular intervals to ensure they're aware and comfortable during the entire migration process from start to finish
  • Order Processing:
    • Fulfilling shared and dedicated web hosting orders
    • Fulfilling SSL orders
    • Fulfilling domain orders
  • Specialized Ticket Departments:
    • Renewing and transferring domain names
    • Allocating and configuring IP addresses
    • Issuing and troubleshooting SSL certificates

Requirements

  • Excellent customer support and communication skills. You will be answering support tickets and working with clients on the phone and via e-mail.
  • Strong familiarity with Linux web hosting software (Apache/Litespeed, FTP, SSH, MySQL, DNS)
  • Familiarity with a variety of web hosting control panels including the InterWorx control panel (along with CPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin and others)
  • Familiarity with how domains work and domain transfer processes
  • Familiarity with CIDR blocks and IP addresses in general.
  • Familiarity with the various types of SSL certificates available and their installation process.
  • Patience and perseverance to solve complex hosting-related issues

Maintenance Engineer

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, USA

The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, documentation and continuous operation of all Nexcess facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the proper maintenance and operation of all critical data center infrastructure, including UPS, HVAC, PDU, ATS, Backup Generators, Fire and Security systems.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance and operation of all non-critical facility systems, including house HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and all other general facility infrastructure.
  • Be the first responder to any and all critical system/facility emergencies 24x7 and be able to perform hands-on emergency repairs as needed.
  • Understand the overall maintenance objectives of our facilities. Continuously improve upon existing documented plans, including preventative, predictive and reactive maintenance procedures. Identify and develop new maintenance plans/procedures as needed.
  • Develop and present proposals for infrastructure upgrades, equipment replacements and building modifications as needed.
  • General maintenance and upkeep of facilities inside and out. Perform hands-on maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Become knowledgeable and stay up to date on best practices, new/emerging data center/facility technologies and systems.
  • Responsible for educating all contractors working within our facilities with respects to the work they are performing and how it may affect any critical systems.
  • Additional duties as required

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of HVAC, UPS, Electrical systems and extensive hands-on experience in a data center environment

Duties

You will be joining our small team of developers on an established project. The software you'll be working on is a data center management all-in-one solution. We have a large list of features to add and other aspects to tweak/fix. You will be working with the rest of the team to accomplish those goals.

The software is written almost entirely in PHP (5.4) with a good amount of javascript. If these are not your core languages but you are a good fit otherwise, we will work with you to bring you up to speed.

Linux System Administrator

Location: Dearborn, Michigan, USA

This position is for a full time Linux System Administrator who will be based out of our Dearborn, MI Data Center with travel to our other Data Centers in the Detroit metro area. We are a Linux based Web hosting company who needs someone to help out on the hardware side of our growing operation. This position is for night-time and/or overnight.

Responsibilities

You will be joining our existing team of System Administrators and will be expected to learn quickly. We need a highly focused and highly organized person who can quickly research, validate and implement changes. While you will have a training period we do expect you to work on many tasks autonomously and expect you to be able to self-diagnose issues and suggest and/or implement solutions.

Requirements

  • Experience with Apache httpd including adding modules, debugging problems, performance tuning, etc.
  • Experience with MySQL 5.X+ including identifying and optimizing slow queries, performance tuning.
  • Experience with PHP 5+ including adding modules, debugging problems in code, understanding what most php.ini directives mean, finding bottlenecks in code, etc.
  • Experience with CentOS 5+ including knowing how to install packages with yum, resolve dependency issues, understanding RPMs, etc.
  • Experience with bash or other scripting languages.
  • Experience writing good documentation.
  • Experience debugging complex problem which involves understanding how the many different parts of a server/CMS/operating system interact.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Desired

  • Experience with qmail and other parts of the djb suite (daemontools, djbdns, tcpserver, etc).
  • Experience with security issues including tracking down how a website was exploited, tuning firewalls, etc.
  • Experience with Magento.
  • PHP programming experience.
  • Experience with alternative web servers/reverse proxies like Litespeed, varnish, or nginx.
