Enterprise Support Engineer

Position Description

This position is for a full time salaried Enterprise Support Engineer (a senior level support position, comparable to third tier work in the industry) within our 24/7 support department. You will check the ego at the door - these technicians must work well both individually and as a team. This team is made up of super friends, and no single superman dictates terms to the clients and the other team members. Working together and documenting all that is done (for the client, the team, and the staff within the support department itself) are non-negotiable requirements.

You will use use your powers to not only answer application-level (Magento, ExpressionEngine, and WordPress) and hosting-related support requests (via both phone and trouble ticket) for clients on our dedicated and cluster plans, but also to onboard new clients, migrate existing ones to different plans, and to design solutions best suited for each of them. Significant and clear opportunities for advancement are abundant for those who excel in the position.

Responsibilities

  1. Understand the clients’ business models, current needs, and future needs.
  2. Become a virtual member of the client’s IT department by creating a strong relationship with them.
  3. Take the lead on client relations for troubleshooting issues as they arise and/or proactively addressing their needs.
  4. Own open incidents and service requests to closure through direct contribution and very regular follow up.
  5. Onboard clients by:
    • Planning migrations and managing expectations and milestones with the project manager and/or Enterprise Support Manager.
    • Ensuring a smooth transition for the client.
    • Assist in establishing best practices across the teams by documenting work done for each client and contributing to the Nexcess Knowledge Library.
  6. Handle audits of site/server performance for current clients and prospective clients to make suggestions/recommendations to those individuals and the Sales department for upgrades and/or improvements.
  7. Be available 24x7 for client emergencies, meetings (with overseas clients), or other engagements.
  8. Maintain knowledge of the current Nexcess dedicated and cluster services and participate in discussions (with other departments) of future offerings for the clients of those services.

Requirements

  1. Passionate about service delivery and creating long-term client relationships.
  2. Ability to present technical issues to non-technical audiences and to make sense of technical issues as presented by a non-technical client.
  3. Strong presentation skills.
  4. Strong and demonstrable technical background, including previous experience in Linux system administration and/or technical architecture.

Position Description

Nexcess is a facilities-based web hosting provider based in Southeastern, Michigan. Nexcess operates 2 Data Center facilities in Michigan and has a presence in many more spread across the globe. The Director of Facilities primary focus, along with the facilities team he or she leads, is the 24/7/365 care of the Nexcess operational infrastructure, facilities and properties. This includes planning (capacity and otherwise), maintenance, construction, security, safety, compliance, 24/7 critical response, etc.

Duties / Responsibilities

  1. Effectively lead the facilities department on all in-scope projects/tasks on a day-to-day basis.
  2. Safely manage and maintain all critical systems to maximize uptime in our 24/7/365 environment.
  3. Ensure all systems (including critical systems) are well maintained.
  4. Oversee all aspects of construction of new data center currently slated to start late 2014.
  5. Ensure operational capacity for short/mid/long-term prospects. Assist with deployment of new capacity both in a project-manager context and as construction consultant (for new facilities).
  6. Ensure operational security for both Nexcess employees and clients.
  7. Propose budgets based on facilities requirements (maintenance, expansion, short and long term goals, etc).
  8. Respond appropriately 24/7/365 to issues relating to our operational status.

Job Requirements

  • 3 years experience as Facilities Director or similar level position
  • Masters degree in applied field or equivalent experience.
  • ITIL certification a plus.
  • Ability to set clear goals and implement performance management effectively.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC/CRAC systems, glycol and air-cooled temperature control systems, UPS systems, automatic transfer switches, diesel generators and high voltage electrical systems in general.
  • Very strong leadership, management and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a broad mandate in a meticulous and accountable manner.
  • Experience developing process documentation for the operation/maintenance of 24/7/365 critical facilities.

The Internal Accountant is responsible for assisting the Chief Financial Officer with all facets of the financial administration of the company, including: preparing financial statements, briefing key partners on the financial condition of the company, preparing for and executing period close procedures, gathering financial information from various departments, assisting with AR and AP tasks, reconciling the company's general ledger to external systems, preparing and disseminating internal reports to key managers, and other special projects.

  • Reconcile external AR/AP systems to GL.
  • Prepare monthly closing reports, and assist with the preparation of financial summaries and various project implementations.

  • Post weekly affiliated-company GL entries; maintain financials for key affiliate companies and SPEs.
  • Prepare all balance sheet asset and liability reconciliations for prepayments and contracted revenue.
  • Reconcile all amortizations for balance sheet liability accounts.
  • Post AR adjustments to the balance sheet each week.
  • Reconcile budget vs. actual for both the company's P&L and specific departments as required.

This position is for a full time Migration Specialist working on site at our data center in Dearborn, MI. Advanced Linux skills are required as we use Linux exclusively.

Responsibilities

  • Website Moves:
    • Transferring client data from other hosts over to their account with us
    • Transferring client data between servers on our network for upgrades
    • Troubleshooting issues related to the data migration to make sure sites are functioning in the new location properly
    • Updating clients on regular intervals to ensure they're aware and comfortable during the entire migration process from start to finish

Position Description

You will be joining our small team of developers on an established project. The software you'll be working on is a data center management all-in-one solution. We have a large list of features to add and other aspects to tweak/fix. You will be working with the rest of the team to accomplish those goals.

The software is written almost entirely in PHP (5.4) with a good amount of javascript. If these are not your core languages but you are a good fit otherwise, we will work with you to bring you up to speed.

Skills Required

  • Object oriented programming experience
    • Any language (PHP is a plus)
    • Framework experience is a plus (ZendFramework)
  • SQL experience
    • MySQL preferred
  • Javascript experience
    • jQuery experience is a plus
  • General knowledge of software development practices and tools
    • Version control experience a plus (svn, git, etc.)
    • Testing framework experience a plus (PHPUnit, etc)
  • A love for programming and getting things done

Position Description

This position is for a full time Linux System Administrator who will be based out of our Dearborn, MI Data Center with travel to our other Data Centers in the Detroit metro area. We are a Linux based Web hosting company who needs someone to help out on the hardware side of our growing operation. This position is for night-time and/or overnight.

Responsibilities

You will be joining our existing team of System Administrators and will be expected to learn quickly. We need a highly focused and highly organized person who can quickly research, validate and implement changes. While you will have a training period we do expect you to work on many tasks autonomously and expect you to be able to self-diagnose issues and suggest and/or implement solutions.

Requirements

  • Experience with Apache httpd including adding modules, debugging problems, performance tuning, etc.
  • Experience with MySQL 5.X+ including identifying and optimizing slow queries, performance tuning.
  • Experience with PHP 5+ including adding modules, debugging problems in code, understanding what most php.ini directives mean, finding bottlenecks in code, etc.
  • Experience with CentOS 5+ including knowing how to install packages with yum, resolve dependency issues, understanding RPMs, etc.
  • Experience with bash or other scripting languages.
  • Experience writing good documentation.
  • Experience debugging complex problem which involves understanding how the many different parts of a server/CMS/operating system interact.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Desired

  • Experience with qmail and other parts of the djb suite (daemontools, djbdns, tcpserver, etc).
  • Experience with security issues including tracking down how a website was exploited, tuning firewalls, etc.
  • Experience with Magento.
  • PHP programming experience.
  • Experience with alternative web servers/reverse proxies like Litespeed, varnish, or nginx.

In your cover letter, please elaborate on your experience and your organizational skills. Laying out performance optimizations you've done to medium to large systems and their effect would be ideal.
