This tutorial describes how to use the Fictioneer Fan Fiction software with your NEXCESS.NET web hosting account. NEXCESS.NET specializes in hosting Fan Fiction software and this tutorial is meant to help you quickly setup your site with our web hosting service.
Fictioneer is open source, meaning that you can use, distribute and change it as long as you don't remove the original author's copyright information.
Fictioneer is a module for the PHP-Nuke Content Management System. For this tutorial, you'll need an installation of PHP-Nuke. If you need help installing PHP-Nuke, check out the PHP-Nuke tutorials in the CMS section of our tutorials page. For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up Fictioneer for PHP-Nuke at http://johnsmith.com/phpnuke/.
Follow these steps to complete the tutorial:
- Download the latest version of Fictioneer from the Tremors Fan website in the download section and unzip the contents of the zip file to your desktop using http://winzip.com. You should now have a folder which contains all the files and folders you need to install and run Fictioneer.
- There are several sections of the Fictioneer
system which need to go into different places in your PHP-Nuke system.
The following will tell you which files and folders need to be uploaded
where on your web hosting account.
- Upload the 'Fictioneer-0.2-phpnuke/html/modules/Fictioneer' folder to the 'phpnuke/modules' folder on your web hosting account
- Upload the 'Fictioneer-0.2-phpnuke/html/admin' folder to the 'phpnuke' folder on your web hosting account
- Upload the 'Fictioneer-0.2-phpnuke/html/images' folder to the 'phpnuke' folder on your web hosting account
You should upload these files and folders using an FTP Program. If you need help with FTPing files, you can check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page.
Create a folder called 'stories' in the 'phpnuke/modules/Fictioneer' folder of your web hosting account.
Once the files and folders are finished uploading and you've created the 'stories' folder, we need to change the permissions on some of the files and folders in order for the script to access them correctly. You can do this using the CHMOD command in your FTP program. If you don't know how to do this, check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page. CHMOD the folders and files as follows:
- CHMOD the 'stories' folder you just created to 777
- CHMOD the 'phpnuke/modules/Fictioneer/config.php' file to 666
- Now you need to import the 'Fictioneer-0.2-phpnuke/docs/fictioneer.sql' file into your database using the phpMyAdmin system. If you don't know how to do this, check out the phpMyAdmin tutorial on our tutorials page.
- You can now access the admin control panel
of your PHP-Nuke system in order to manage your Fictioneer system.
For this example, we'll point to 'http://johnsmith.com/phpnuke/admin.php'.
You should now be on the login page for your admin control panel.
Enter your admin username and password. Your screen should look like
this:

Click the 'Login' button to continue. You should now be on the main admin control panel page and you should see the new Fictioneer option in your control panel. Your screen should look like this:

Click on the Fictioneer option in your admin control panel. You should now be on the main control panel page for Fictioneer. From here you can manage your Fictioneer system how you see fit. Your screen should look like this:
You should also notice, if you scroll down a little bit, that a Fictioneer link has been added to your main menu. Your screen should look like this:

Your Fictioneer web hosting installation is now complete!
