This tutorial describes how to install the Beehive Forum software on your NEXCESS.NET web hosting account. Beehive Forum is fully supported on all of our shared hosting and reseller hosting plans. This tutorial will help install and configure Beehive Forum with our web hosting service - but the procedure should be basically the same for most other web hosting services.

Beehive Forum is a powerful, feature-rich, open-source project for creating a highly-configurable frame-based online discussion forum. Beehive Forum is licensed under the General Public License. It is free to use, and distribute.

Our hosting plans support Beehive Forum, but not all hosting companies do! If you're not a NEXCESS.NET client, then you should check the minimum requirements for Beehive Forum on their website.

For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up Beehive Forum at http://johnsmith.com/bee/.

  1. Create the database that Beehive will use
The first thing to do is to run through the SiteWorx MySQL tutorial and create a MySQL username and database for Beehive Forum to use to store the information it needs. In this tutorial, we are going to use db_user as the Beehive Forum database user and bee_db as the Beehive Forum database.
  2. Put the files on your hosting account
Go to the Beehive Forum download page and download either the ".zip" or ".tar.gz" version of the software. Unpack the Beehive Forum archive using a program like in Zip, WinRar, or 7Zip on your local computer. Locate the forum folder and upload its contents to the directory where you wish to install Beehive Forum. You should do this using an FTP client. If you need help with FTPing files, you may want to check out our FTP tutorials. As stated before we will install Beehive Forum in the the directory named bee.
  3. Run the Beehive installation script
Once everything's uploaded, you we need to run the forum's install script. This is located in the install sub directory of your forum. To run the script point your browser to http://johnsmith.com/bee/install.php (replacing johnsmith.com with your domain.) You should see the beehive forum installation script. From the drop down list select "New Install" as the Installation Method. Type in an Default Forum Webtag this will be your MySQL table prefix. Then enter the MySQL database configuration settings you made earlier. Then create an Admin Account. Keep everything else default then click the Install button.

Enter your settings, including the database settings from step one.
The installation script will now recommend that you remove the /install directory. Do so or just check the remove install directory radio button. If all went well, you should now have a working forum! After deleting the /install sub directory (as is described by the install script) you can then log in to your newly created administrator account, using the details you specified at install.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Beehive Forum, If any-part of this Tutorial is unclear or you need further help, don't hesitate to contact our support team. Read the Beehive Forum documentation for information regarding forum customization.
