This tutorial describes how to use the Simple Chat chat software with your NEXCESS.NET web hosting account. NEXCESS.NET specializes in hosting Simple Chat software and this tutorial is meant to help you quickly setup your site with our web hosting service.
Simple Chat is open source, meaning that you can use and distribute it as you'd like as long as you don't change it.
For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up Simple Chat at http://johnsmith.com/simple/.
Follow these steps to complete the tutorial:
- Download the latest version of Simple Chat from the Simple Chat website and unzip the contents of the zip file to your desktop using http://winzip.com. You should now have all the files and folders you need to install and run Simple Chat. Create a folder on your desktop named 'simple' and place all the files and folders into it.
- Upload the 'simple' folder to your web hosting account. You can do this using an FTP program. If you don't know how to do this, check out the FTP tutorial on our tutorials page. Once the Simple Chat files and folders are finished uploading, you need to change the permissions on one of the folders so the script can write to it. You can do this using the CHMOD command in your FTP program. If you don't know how to do this, check out the FTP tutorial on our tutorials page. You need to CHMOD the 'data' folder to 777.
- Once the permissions have been changed,
you can access the main page of your chatroom. For this example,
we'll point to 'http://www.johnsmith.com/simple/index.php'. You should
now be on the login screen for the chatroom. Enter a username to
chat with and choose a different colored boy or girl icon if you'd
like. For this example, we'll enter the username 'admin' and a blue
boy icon. Your screen should look like this:

Click the 'Ok' button to login. You should now be logged into the chatroom. Your installation is now complete. You can chat at will! The Simple Chat tutorial is now complete. Your screen should look like this:
