This tutorial explains how to install LifeType with your NEXCESS.NET web hosting account. This tutorial is meant to help you quickly setup and configure LifeType Gold with our web hosting service.
LifeType is an open-source blogging platform with support for multiple blogs and users in a single installation, as well as many other features. LifeType is licensed under the General Public License, so it's free to use, and distribute.
Make sure your host supports LifeType! This step only applies only if you don't have a NEXCESS.NET hosting plan - all of our shared and reseller plans support LifeType. If you're not a NEXCESS.NET client, then you can check the minimum requirements for LifeType on their website.
For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up LifeType at http://johnsmith.com/lifetype
- Set up a mySQL database for LifeType to use
LifeType will need a mySQL database for LifeType to use to store its data. You can review the SiteWorx MySQL tutorial and create a MySQL user and database. Be sure to write down or remember the name of the user, the name of the database and and the password the database user. For this tutorial, we'll use db_user as the LifeType database user and lifetype_db as the LifeType database. - Set up the software on your hosting account
Download the most recent LifeType software from their website and unpack the LifeType archive using an extracting program such as Win Zip, WinRar, or 7Zip. Upload the uncompressed files to the directory were you wish to install LifeType, in this case we will install LifeType in the the directory named lifetype. You will then need to change some directory and file permissions. Using your FTP client locate the following files then change the permissions of the tmp and gallery directories, and the config.properties.php located in the config directory to 777 or Read, Write, And Execute for Owner, Group, And Public. Also change the permissions of the config.php file to 666. - Configuring Lifetype
Open a new browser window, navigate to the directory you uploaded LifeType to, http://johnsmith.com/lifetype/ in our example. You should see a LifeType page indicating that it is not installed, so click the installation link to continue. The installation script will check to make sure that all the files and folders are in the proper place as well that the permissions are set correctly. The installation script will now ask for the MySQL information you created earlier. Now you will need to create a user, and then the installation script will ask you to name your blog as well as select a template to use.
Enter the database info for the database you set up for LifeType to use -
Some final steps...
Before you proceed further you need to change the permissions on the config.properties.php file located in the config directory to 766. Remove the wizard.php and summery.php files located in the directory were you uploaded lifetype. Congratulations! You have successfully installed LifeType.
