This tutorial describes how to use the CuteNews weblog software with your NEXCESS.NET web hosting account. NEXCESS.NET specializes in hosting CuteNews software and this tutorial is meant to help you quickly setup your site with our web hosting services.
For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up CuteNews at http://johnsmith.com/cutenews/.
Follow these steps to complete the tutorial:
-
Download and extract CuteNews
Download the latest version of CuteNews from the CuteNews website and unzip the contents of the zip file to your desktop using http://winzip.com.You should now have a 'cutenews' folder containing all the files and folders necessary for installing and running CuteNews. -
Upload the files
Upload the 'cutenews' folder to your web hosting account. You can do this using an FTP program. If you don't know how to do this, check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page. Once the CuteNews files are done uploading, change permissions on some of them by using the CHMOD command in your FTP program. If you don't know how to do this, check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page. You need to CHMOD the files and folders as follows:- CHMOD the 'index.php' file to 777
- CHMOD the 'data' folder and all the files and folders in the 'data' folder to 777
-
Run the installer
Once you've set the correct permissions, you can now access the CuteNews 'index.php' page. For this example, we'll point to 'http://www.johnsmith.com/cutenews/index.php'. You should now be on the first page of the CuteNews installer. Click the 'Proceed Installation' button to continue. The CuteNews script will check to see if you set the correct permissions on the files. If you receive any errors, go back and make sure you CHMOD the files correctly.
Ensure that all the files have the correct permissions. - Configure CuteNews
You should now be on the configurations page. The first field is the URL to CuteNews. This should be correct, so you can leave it as is. The rest of the fields are where you enter the information for your admin account. Enter the information in the fields according to your preferences.
Set up the admin account and other initial options - Delete the install file and login!
Before you login, delete the 'inc/install.mdu' file from your webspace for security purposes. You can do this using your FTP program. Then click on the 'login page' link and enter the username and password you created for your admin account. You should now be on the main page of the admin control panel. From here you can manage and customize your CuteNews blog! For more information on how to use CuteNews once it's installed, check out the CuteNews Forum.
