This tutorial describes how to use the Coranto news software with your NEXCESS.NET web hosting account. NEXCESS.NET specializes in hosting Coranto scripts and this tutorial is meant to help you quickly setup your Coranto with our web hosting service.

Coranto is free to use and distribute as long as you keep their copyright at the bottom of the page.

For the sake of this tutorial we'll assume that you own the domain 'johnsmith.com' and are setting up Coranto at http://johnsmith.com/coranto/.

  1. Download and extract the latest version
Download the latest version of Coranto from the Coranto website and unzip the zip file using an archive programe such as http://winzip.com. Rename the unzipped folder to 'coranto' and upload it to your web hosting account. If you need help with FTPing files, you can check out the FTP tutorials on our tutorials page.
  2. Set up permissions on the Coranto files
Once the Coranto files and folders have finished uploading, you need to change the permissions on some of the files. You can do this with the CHMOD command in your FTP program. CHMOD the files according to the following:
    • CHMOD 'crcfg.dat', 'newsdat.txt', 'nsettings.cgi', and 'nsbk.cgi' to 666
    • CHMOD 'coranto.cgi' and 'viewnews.cgi' to 755
  3. Login to the new installation
Now we're going to access the 'coranto.cgi' file so we can login and finish installing Coranto. In this example, we'll point to 'http://www.johnsmith.com/coranto/coranto.cgi'. If you receive any errors, check to make sure you set the correct permissions on the files. To login, Enter 'setup' in the 'Username' field and leave the password blank.
  4. Configuring Coranto

Agree to the licensing and setup your privacy settings. Then Scroll down to the 'File Paths' section. Check to make sure the file paths are correct. They should be.

Click the 'Continue Setup' button to save these settings and go on to the next page.
