Green Web Hosting

renewable energy

Here at NEXCESS.NET we have committed ourselves to do what we can to run our business as greenly as possible. And so we recycle, watch our use of materials, etc.

But as web hosting company, our biggest challenge is usage of electrical power. We have hundreds of computers running in our Dearborn, MI data center - and they're all using power. And more power is used for cooling and running all of the systems that make a data center work.

One option would be to simply purchase carbon offsets to compensate for our greenhouse gas emissions. This is a commendable goal, and will likely be a part of our final green solution. But we strongly feel that it is better to not emit in the first place, and so our primary goal will be to switch to renewable, carbon-neutral energy sources as quickly as possible.

So we've set a goal to be using 100% renewable power by December 1st, 2009. As a first step we've enrolled in Detroit Edison's Green Currents program - we're now using 10% renewable energy from wind, solar and biofuels, and will be using 25% by June 1st, 2008.

Stay tuned! We'll chronicle our ongoing efforts on this page.
